Infinitive adalah bentuk dengan awalan to + V1.

Bagaimana penggunaannya?

The students are to do the school assignment.

She is to obey the rules of her parents.

I am to go home before 11.00 PM.

The game is supposed to begin at 10.00 PM.

The committee is supposed to meet tomorrow.

I am supposed to go to the meeting. My boss told me that he wants me to attend.

"What are we going to do tomorrow?”

“To play basketball.”

Seharusnya “We’re going to play basketball”

Coba bedakan dengan

"What is your hobby?”

“Playing basketball”

Seharusnya “My hobby is playing basketball”

He comes here to see me.

We watched the match lively to support the team.

I borrow money to pay the rent.

Mobile phone was first to emerge in 1995.

I am the second person to buy the book.

This is the thousandth to say the pray.

I need a glass of milk to drink = minuman susu.

We need some books to read = buku bacaan.

It is too good to be true.

I have enough strength to lift the box.

I’m strong enough to lift the box.

Kata sifat lain yang dapat diikuti dengan to:

She advised us to wait until tomorrow.

He allows me to use his car.

I’m asking you to help them.

Kata kerja lain yang diikuti dengan infinitive + pronoun + to:

I can’t afford to buy the new iPad.

They agreed to help us.

She is appearing to worry about the weather.

Kata kerja lain yang diikuti to:

CATATAN: Beberapa verb yang dipakai di atas mempunyai arti yang berbeda dari biasanya!

Haruskah kita hafal verb di atas? TIDAK PERLU!

Yang perlu kita tahu, infinitive dalam hal ini dipakai untuk menyambungkan dua verb yang dipakai sekaligus dalam satu predikat. Infinitive digunakan jika dalam arti penggunaannya, verb pertama dikerjakan sebelum verb kedua.

Contoh:

I promise to meet you.

Saya berjanji (dahulu, baru) bertemu kamu.

I didn’t expect to be invited to his party.

The rain seems to have stopped.

Jane is fortunate to have been given a scholarship.

Dalam bentuk causative, penggunaan HAVE, MAKE, HELP, dan LET dalam banyak sekali tense yang diikuti oleh objective pronoun diikuti oleh V1 saja.

He made me cry.

They will have someone prepare the food.

We are helping her finish the assignment.

I’m letting you know the truth.
